Abstract:
The ductile deformation behavior of the rock-forming minerals has been extensively studied, particularly after the advent of the Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique in geosciences. The EBSD technique allows us to determine the orientations of the crystallographic axes of the target grains, which are used to characterize various features of deformation, e.g., temperature, strain regime, intensity, nature (pure- or simple-shear dominated), and mechanism (dislocation- or diffusion-creep). Interestingly, crystallographic orientations are also inherited from the parent grains by the daughter crystals that replace them. Such inheritance allows assessment of the deformation characteristics of once-stable minerals.
